EU horticultural regulations
Under EU regulation 2257/94 bananas must be at least 13.97cm (5.5 inches) long and 2.96cm (1.06 inches) round. They must not have ‘abnormal curvature’ as defined in an eight page directive of 1984
Any that curve more than 10mm per 10cm in length cannot be sold as ‘Class 1’
Must not be less than 5.6cm in diameter between July and October to be sold as ‘Class 1’
Cannot be so described if less than 25% of the surface is red
Cannot be less than 1.9cm wide at the thickest end, except in ‘baby’ varieties
