Suicide data set: general information

 
The following data were collected from prisoners on remand and those starting serving prison terms. They are all males. The research is broadly into assessments of suicide risk by a prison psychologist and the variables are given below.

You will need SPSS installed on your computer in order to access the above file. Depending on the set-up of the computer used, on opening the data set an empty output window may appear. If this happens, navigate back to the data using 'window' which is located at the right hand side of the toolbar next to 'help' in the SPSS program.

firstpri
whether or not this is the man’s first experience of prison life. The values are on the SPSS file.

agegroup
category 1 is the youngest, category 5 is the oldest. The values are on the SPSS file.

typeprison
whether remand only or also for convicted prisoners. The values are on the SPSS file.

men in cell
the number of men in the same cell.

crowding
the prisoner’s subjective assessment of his living conditions. The larger the number the more the man feels overcrowded.

timerec
the amount of time in months since the prisoner’s reception into his present prison.

extra1
a psychologist’s rating of the prisoner at the time of entry to the prison. The higher the score the more extraverted, the lower the score the more introverted.

Depress1
a psychologist’s rating of the prisoner at the time of entry to the prison. The higher the score, the more depressed.

Stress1
a psychologist’s rating of the prisoner at the time of entry to the prison. The higher the score, the more stress.

Suicrsk1
a psychologist’s rating of the prisoner’s risk of committing/attempting suicide at the time of entry to the prison. The higher the score the greater the risk.

Extra2
a psychologist’s rating of the prisoner at the present time. The higher the score the more extraverted, the lower the score the more introverted.

Depress2
a psychologist’s rating of the prisoner at the present time. The higher the score, the more depressed.

Stress2
a psychologist’s rating of the prisoner at the present time. The higher the score, the more stress.

Suicrsk2
a psychologist’s rating of the prisoner’s risk of committing/attempting suicide at the present time. The higher the score the greater the risk.
